Pick up your rental car in Osaka or one of the Shinkansen stations and begin your journey to Naruto, the gateway to Shikoku. Drive across the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge, once the longest suspension bridge in the world, offering sweeping views of the Seto Inland Sea.
Upon arrival in Naruto, witness one of Japan’s most famous natural phenomena—the Naruto Whirlpools. These massive tidal currents create swirling whirlpools beneath the bridge, a spectacular sight best viewed from Naruto Park. Spend the afternoon taking in the scenery before settling in for the night.
The journey continues to Takamatsu, a city known for its meticulously landscaped gardens and cultural heritage. Take a detour to Ritsurin Garden, where serene ponds, wooden bridges, and traditional teahouses create a picture-perfect setting.
In the afternoon, visit the Shikoku Mura Open-Air Museum, a fascinating collection of restored Edo-period farmhouses, merchant homes, and cultural artifacts. Spend the evening strolling through Takamatsu’s lively downtown, sampling the city’s famous Sanuki udon before calling it a night.
Begin the day with a visit to the Konpira Grand Theatre, Japan’s oldest Kabuki theatre, before heading to Konpira Shrine, perched high above the town. Climbing over 700 stone steps to reach the shrine is a challenge, but the breathtaking views of the countryside make it worthwhile.
From there, the road winds into Iya Valley, one of Japan’s most remote and unspoiled regions. Here, misty mountains and deep ravines create an awe-inspiring landscape. Cross the Kazura-Bashi vine bridge, a centuries-old suspension bridge made of woven vines, swinging gently above the valley floor. After a full day of exploration, relax at a traditional ryokan with an onsen bath and a kaiseki dinner.
Leaving the mountains behind, the drive descends toward the southern coast of Shikoku. In Kochi, one of Japan’s best-preserved castles, Kochi Castle, offers panoramic views over the city and surrounding hills.
Just a short walk away, Hirome Market is the city’s social hub, where locals gather for fresh seafood, sake, and lively conversation. Sample Kochi’s most famous dish, katsuo no tataki, lightly seared bonito fish served with citrus and garlic. Spend the rest of the day exploring the city’s laid-back coastal vibe before turning in for the night.
Heading north, the road leads to Matsuyama, home to one of Japan’s last surviving original castles. Matsuyama Castle stands atop a hill, reachable by a scenic chairlift ride or a short uphill walk. The old town below offers a charming blend of traditional tea houses, wooden shopfronts, and local boutiques.
In the afternoon, unwind at Dogo Onsen, one of Japan’s oldest hot springs and the inspiration for Studio Ghibli’s Spirited Away. The historic bathhouse exudes nostalgia, and an evening soak is the perfect way to experience its timeless charm.
The final stretch of the journey takes you across the Shimanami Kaido, a scenic road that connects Honshu and Shikoku via seven stunning bridges, passing through picturesque islands along the way.
Stop in Onomichi, a harbor town known for its temple walks and breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea. A visit to Senkō-ji Temple, perched on a hillside, provides a panoramic farewell to Shikoku.
Arriving in Fukuyama, visit Fukuyama Castle before returning your rental car. From here, continue your journey by Shinkansen, either to Hiroshima or back to Osaka, bringing your Shikoku adventure to a close.
