An Overview of Your Adventure
DAY 1
Travel by local railway and funicular through lush, forested landscapes to Koyasan, the sacred heart of Shingon Buddhism. Walk among towering cypress trees and explore Okunoin Cemetery, Japan’s largest and most atmospheric, home to the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi and the resting places of samurai, poets, and even modern corporations.
In the evening, settle into a traditional temple lodging, where you’ll experience monastic life firsthand. Enjoy a Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian dinner) before joining a devotional ceremony, immersing yourself in the tranquility of this sacred retreat.
DAY 2
Wake before dawn to participate in a Buddhist morning ritual, a rare opportunity to observe ancient chants and spiritual practices. After a simple temple breakfast, take time to soak in the peaceful surroundings before beginning your journey back to the modern world.
