go Local in Phnom Penh and Kratie

Want to see a different side of Phnom Penh and Kratie? In Cambodia’s capital city, the locals head to Prek Leap where a number of small restaurants consist of scattered dining platforms on the riverbank, on the water – even in the trees! The Golden River Restaurant is a particular favourite and where Diethelm takes guests for a Go Local experience.

Additionally, an interesting Go Local destination in Kratie is Angkor Ban, a group of seven villages located along the Mekong River, several of which are home to the “Indigo Community.” Here, the local specialty is using indigo dye silk and cotton in the traditional manner. Caring for Young Khmer (CYK), a Japanese NGO, has encouraged local women to practise and preserve the arts of weaving and natural dyeing. Many of these traditional skills were lost in the aftermath of the civil war, but CYK has helped revitalised these artisan communities which are especially known for their “ikat” woven fabrics.
